SPINE SURGERY

  • Received highly specialized training in Spine Surgery in Dublin, Ireland and England.
  • Introduced Endoscopic Microdiscectomy for Disc Prolapse in India for the first time.
  • For correction of Scoliosis, when required 1st stage anterior surgery is done by minimally invasive keyhole technique using Thoracoscopy rather than open Thoracotomy method. Second stage surgery is done after a few days using modern spinal implants and intra-operative spinal cord monitoring. Patient is able to mobilize within 2 days of surgery.
  • Organized number of workshops on Spine Surgery and have been on teaching faculty for number of conferences/workshops. The paper entitled "Why Anterior Approach to Spine" was awarded Best Paper Award in Annual Orthopaedic Conference in 1996 in New Delhi.
  • Demonstrated Live Surgery related to spine fixation with Pedicle Screw Fixation in conferences held in Apollo hospital, New Delhi, India,Army Hospital, New Delhi and Bhopal, India.
  • Performed Live Surgery 'Microdiscectomy' in Annual Conference of Indian Orthopaedic Associations held at Patna in January 2003.
  • Invited to deliver prestigious Guest Lecture on 'Management of Thoracolumbar Fractures' in Annual Conference of Indian Orthopaedic Association in 2003.

JOINT REPLACEMENT

  • Dr. Gulati have been doing Joint Replacement Surgery for over 15 years ever since Dr. Gulati started the same in England from 1988 and later in Dublin, Ireland upto 1994. Upon his return to India, this work was continued when Dr. Gulati was Head of Orthopaedic Unit at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, New Delhi and later Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Batra Hospital, New Delhi followed by Apollo Hospital, New Delhi.
  • Wrote a thesis on Revision of Hip Replacement in University of Liverpool, England in 1988.
  • On teaching faculty of various conferences and workshops on Joint Replacement in India and abroad.
  • Invited to Indonesia for Golden Jubilee Orthopaedic Conference and Dr.Gulati demonstrated Live, Total Knee Replacement and Total Hip Replacement there. This conference was graced by the presence of President of Indonesia.
  • Demonstrated Knee Replacement Surgery Live in conferences in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar etc.
  • Organized conference and Hands on workshop on Unicondylar Knee Arthroplasty and High Flex Total Knee Arthroplasty at ApolloHospital, in March 2003. This was attended by approximately 150 delegates and included faculty from India and abroad

Dr. Sawant is an Orthopaedic surgeon specializing in Knee Surgery. He has had the privilege of learning Orthopaedic surgery at renowned centers in India, England, Europe and the USA. He has spent over eight years training and practicing in England. His last appointment in Englandwas as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, when he achieved fame for successfully treating major injuries to the leg of an international footballer.

Dr. Sawant has several first author publications in international journals like - The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, The Journal of Arthroplasty, The Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, Injury, The Journal of Hand Surgery, ‘The Knee’. In deformity surgery, Dr. Hegde has successfully managed a wide range of deformities from mild to the very severe using back, front back, and multiple staged interventions. Dr. Hegde has pioneered the use of anterior as well as posterior instrumentation systems

Dr. Hegde has surgically removed the variety of tumors including benign (eg. Hemangioma) and malignant

Dr Hegde has designed in collaboration with Medtronic Sofamor Danek (MSD) a comprehensive spinal instrumentation system for anterior fixation in a variety of spinal problems including spinal deformities, tumors, infections and injuries. The system is awaiting FDA clearance and will be marketed internationally by MSD. It is called The Pegasus.

Birmingham Mid Head Resection Prosthesis (BMHR)

ARCH (Asian Regional Centre for Hip Resurfacing), where Dr. Bose performs Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) has been selected to be one of the very few centres worldwide to do BMHR (Birmingham Mid Head Resection prosthesis). This will be the only centre in Asia to offer the Birmingham Mid Head Resection prosthesis. 

Birmingham Mid Head Resection prosthesis is advancement in the BHR and will expand the indications for hip resurfacing surgery. Birmingham Mid Head Resection prosthesis (BMHR) helps advanced aged patients to have Birmingham Hip Resurfacing. 

The BMHR has specifically been designed for patients who have weaker bone in the head of the femur. 
In the BMHR more of the weak bone is re-sected and is replaced with metal. 
This will dramatically increase the range of patients who can have this surgery.
X-ray wise it looks almost like the BHR but the amount of bone removed is more. Thus the risk of fracture in post-op is reduced or eliminated for borderline patients.
It is technically complex to do and hence has been released only to select surgeons like Dr.Bose around the world.
